In 2024, we completed the renovation of our arts & crafts home, Cartrefle, as a welcoming retreat that celebrates our love of the Welsh landscape.
The house overlooks the Menai Straits with views of both the Menai and Britannia Bridges. Paths wind through five acres of gardens and woodlands to the waterfront or if you prefer, to the pool house.
The interior is designed with warm colours, comforting textiles and contemporary ease. As many as 16 guests can play, gather, rest and dream in our beautiful home.
Overview
History
Built in 1876, Cartrefle was the Welsh retreat of Sir Charles and Lady Isham until 1903 when the estate was bought by a successful industrialist.
While much of the original house was lost in a fire in 1917, the house was rebuilt and purchased by the Church. It became the residence of the Bishop of Bangor and renamed Llys yr esgob - The Bishop's Court.
The house was sold by the Church in 1956 when the original name was restored to Cartrefle.
House
On arriving at Cartrefle, you enter through the large front door into a large hallway. Off the hall is the kitchen, dining room and a spacious drawing room.
All these rooms have enjoy views over the gardens to the Menai Straits and Snowdonia beyond.
There are two twin/double ensuite bedrooms on the ground floor and a further 4 double bedrooms (3 are ensuite) on the first floor, plus a twin & bunk room (sleeps 4).
Gardens
The gardens and woodlands (totally circa 5 acres) are truly spectacular. From the large balcony outside the kitchen, stone steps lead down to sweeping lawns planted with mature mature and trees.
With colour from seasonal rhododendrons, bluebell woods and flowering shrubs, guests can explore various winding pathways down to the Menai Strait. Walking through the lawns, you will find the pool house, with its covered indoor swimming pool. Steps up from here lead back to the large parking area by the driveway to the front door.

Cartrefle’s master bedroom is a spacious, comfortable retreat with garden and mountain range views.
Menai, double, ensuite
This double bedroom has an amazing view of Menai Bridge and Snowdonia beyond.
YnYs Gored Goch, double, ensuite
Named for YnYs Gored Goch (Red Weir Island) in the Menai Strait, guests staying in this room have a view of Britannia Bridge.
Dwy Bônt, double
Guests will enjoy the sumptuous large window seat, positioned to take in views of the iconic bridges, Cartefle’s gardens, the Straits and Snowdonia range beyond. A large family bathroom is conveniently located directly opposite your bedroom.
Yr Wyddfa, twin and bunk beds (sleeps 4)
Named after our highest mountain in Wales, this bedroom, includes a bunk bed, plus twin beds and is designed for flexibility to accommodate children and adults.
Housekeeping
Where possible, we adopt practices that minimise environmental impacts. For example, all the bed linen is made from organic cotton, protecting cotton growers from harmful chemicals and safeguarding local ecosystems. For laundry, we provide guests with ‘ecoeggs’ to replace harmful detergents and eliminate plastic.
Pets
Two well-behaved dogs are welcome.
Each pet is charged at £60 per week or part thereof.

To encourage wildlife we have chosen to maintain and develop our woodland trails - featuring a multitude of specimen trees.
Our lawns and gardens offer space for outside games.
*We plan to reopen Cartrefle’s pool house later in 2024/2025 after completing an upgrade.
Accessibility
Cartrefle is a beautiful historic house. This does place some limitations on accessibility, however following our extensive renovations we are delighted that we can welcome all ages and abilities. Two beautifully renovated bedrooms are located on the ground floor, both with walk-in showers.
Travel cots and highchairs are also available. For the furry members of the family, we provide luxury dog beds and treats!
Anglesey and surrounding area has hundreds of walks, and we provide advice on the mobility required for a diverse range of walks.

Practicalities
There is ample private parking – with room for at least six cars. We currently do not have power points on site but the closest is just three minutes away (click for more details).
The fully equipped kitchen has a cooker, microwave, refrigerator, freezer and a washing machine.
Homestay includes
Hammam towels for the hot tub, Smart TV, WiFi internet and board games, We provide Welsh charcoal, logs and kindling for barbecues and fires.
